10 Best Unique Crochet Ideas for Babies

1. Fold Up Unicorn Play Set

First on the list, we have this adorable Unicorn Play Set by Joanita Theron Designs. This free pattern includes the instructions to make two unicorns, accessories for them (including pillows, blankets, and cupcakes!), as well as a play mat that folds up to store the entire play set when finished. I also love that the pattern includes pockets to store the smaller pieces in.

Depending on the baby’s age, you may want to skip the smaller pieces, or wait to make them until they are older. I love how fun, creative, and unique this whole idea is, and the ripple stitch for the play mat is so cute and gives the whole kit a perfect finish. Joanita says this pattern is a great stash and scrap buster as well! I love these kinds of patterns to clear out the stash.

You can find the first part of the pattern to make the play mat here.

You can find the second part of the pattern to make the unicorn dolls here.

You can find the third part of the pattern to make the accessories here.

2. Costumes for Baby

When I came across these patterns for Disney princess themed crochet costumes for babies, my heart melted. How cute are these?! I’d be making a set in every princess I could think of! Imagine how adorable baby photos with these soft and stunning crocheted princess outfits would be!

Once you get clicking on these or do a search on Pinterest, you’ll very quickly fall down a rabbit hole of inspiration. I sure did! These are probably some of my favorite crochet patterns I have seen for babies, especially the Alice in Wonderland outfit!

As soon as I saw these Flamingo Baby Booties, I knew I had to include them in this roundup! Baby shoes, socks, and slippers are so cute because they are so tiny, and these whimsical booties are no exception. How adorable would these be on those tiny feet? Keep those toesies warm in style with this pattern by Yarnutopia.

4. Baby Toy Garden

As someone who spends quite a bit of time in her garden growing vegetables throughout the spring and summer months, this Baby Toy Garden by Winding Road Crochet nearly stopped my heart with its adorableness. The free pattern includes instructions to make the pots, the “dirt”, a beet, radish, carrot, and flower.

I can just imagine how much fun little ones would have mixing and matching the plants with different pots as they pretend to grow their make-believe garden.

I’ll race you to the free pattern here!

5. Round Ripple Afghan

If you’re going to make a baby blanket, why not make one that is out of this world? I love the unique idea to turn this blanket into our solar system, and the planet appliques make it great for sensory play for baby as well. Such a fun take on the round ripple afghan!

You can find the original Rainbow Ripple Afghan pattern by Celeste Young for free on Ravelry here.

You can find the post she made regarding the Space, the Rippled Frontier version of the Rainbow Ripple Afghan here! She explains that the blanket itself was made with different colors, and each planet was crocheted as circles with embroidery details.

6. Crochet Sensory Book

Speaking of sensory play for babies, how much fun would it be to create this Crochet Sensory Book by Winding Road Crochet? With all the various crochet stitches out there, there seems to be an unlimited combination of textures, colors, and ideas to keep baby’s mind engaged. I love the creativity that went into designing this!

Each page of the book is a swatch of different stitches, and it’s even all buttoned up and decorated to look like a book. I can’t get enough!

Find the free pattern here.

7. Educational Baby Ball

I love how intricate and beautiful this Educational Baby Ball by Patricia Heller looks. Not only would it be a soft and fun toy for baby to play with, but it’s educational too! What a unique, fun, and cute way to teach your baby different animals. This one should definitely be added to your list of crochet projects for baby!

Find the free pattern on Ravelry here!

8. Farm Animal Finger Puppet Playset

Now, this Farm Animal Finger Puppet Playset by 5 Little Monsters is a must-make! The tiny farm animal puppets are so cute, and the drawstring bag made to look like a barn to keep them in is my favorite! This one would be great for carrying in your purse or diaper bag to entertain the little ones while you’re out and about.

Find the free pattern here!

9. Farm Animals in a Barn

Or, why not crochet your baby an entire farm, complete with a white picket fence and everything? This pattern by Laura Sutcliffe on Annie’s Attic includes crochet instructions to make a horse, cow, pig, sheep, a hen and her nest, hay bales, food troughs, a pasture with a fence, and a whole dang barn to put it all in!

Such a fun, unique design, and it’s sure to keep the little ones entertained for hours. I have a nephew currently obsessed with all things farm animals, so this may just be his Christmas present this year!

You can purchase the pattern on Annie’s Attic here.

10. Fishing Game Kid’s Toy

This one is probably more suited toward older toddlers, but it’s just too cute to not include here. This Fishing Game by Alli Crafts is so unique and absolutely adorable. Each little fish has a magnet inside them, and so does the crochet fishing hook. Little ones will have so much fun “catching” each fish! The pattern designer says this can be a great toy to teach colors and counting. And, when finished, the entire “pond” can be cinched up into a bag to hold all the pieces. What a great idea!

With bold patterns and chunky stitches on crocheters’ minds in 2024, first in the lineup is this cozy farmhouse blanket by Spotted Horse Design Co! 2. Waffle Stitch Blanket With Fringe

One of the first blankets I ever made was crocheted with the waffle stitch. It is an easy-to-learn stitch, and it adds so much depth and bulk to your blanket, making for a very toasty cuddling companion. The fringe detail on this blanket adds an extra touch of comfort and gives the blanket a professional finish. This beautiful throw is sure to be a winner, whether you intend it as a gift or to keep it for yourself!

This blanket is crocheted with Bernat Blanket Big yarn and a 25mm hook! Dang! The designer says this blanket can also be crocheted using your fingers, but that might have to be an attempt for another day for me!

Trend #2: Oversized, Textured Shawls!

This cute crocheted chick phone case would make an adorable Easter gift. The chick applique finish is just so sweet! 3. Pooh Phone Pouch

As soon as I saw this Winnie the Pooh phone pouch, I knew I had to include it in this roundup. It’s adorable! The pattern even includes a strap so you can carry your phone with you as more of a purse. I don’t think I can resist making this one!

They would also make great gift ideas!

This Margo Bracelet by Hilaria Fina is one of the most beautiful crochet jewelry pieces I’ve ever seen! The use of studs in the center of each flower just gives it a sweet and elegant finish. 13. Giraffe Rattle

Did you know you can also make crochet rattles for babies? Until I was searching for patterns for this very roundup, I had never seen anything like it before, but I can’t wait to make one! This pattern by Enjoy Toy Designs features three different options for making your rattle. You can even make a unicorn!

I absolutely love the black and white striped detail that is meant to catch the baby’s attention as well as the sweet embroidered faces. This pattern comes with very detailed instructions as well as videos to help you through each step of bringing these rattles to life!

14. Baby Raccoon Rattle

Toys By Knit Friends offer dozens and dozens of patterns of crochet animals for babies! Among them, they have countless patterns for various animal rattles. They have patterns for the ones featured above such as the zebra, sloth, elephant, flamingo, lion, tiger, and pig, but they also have many more adorable patterns that are not featured in this photo.

My favorite among them is probably the racoon one, as I love his little features and the addition of the yellow collar detail. The wooden handles give the rattle an overall classic and nostalgic feel as well!

15. Hippo Ring Tower Toy

Remember those ring stacking toys from when you were a kid? Well, who would have thought there were crocheted versions of them?! This hippo ring tower by Ludas Amigurumi is such a fun and creative spin on an old toy. Each piece of the hippo is crocheted separately to be stacked up and back together by baby, developing those crucial motor skills and hand/eye coordination!

Whoever you crochet this toy for, it is bound to be a hit!
